Kilimanjaro route
The steepest and most direct route — best for experienced, fit trekkers who have acclimatised beforehand.
Umbwe climbs a steep forest ridge from the south to reach Barranco Camp quickly, where it joins the southern circuit. It is short and demanding, commonly climbed over six or seven days.
Because of the rapid early gain in altitude, it is usually recommended only for experienced trekkers, ideally after acclimatising on another mountain such as Mount Meru.
Prior high-altitude experience is strongly recommended.
