Clear turquoise water and white sand on a Zanzibar beach

Coast & Islands

Zanzibar

White-sand beaches, the historic streets of Stone Town and warm Indian Ocean water — a natural place to relax after a safari or climb.

The Zanzibar archipelago lies off Tanzania's coast in the Indian Ocean. Its main island, Unguja, combines long beaches and coral reefs with a rich Swahili culture shaped by centuries of trade across the ocean.

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, markets and historic buildings. Beyond the town, visitors enjoy beach stays, snorkelling and diving, spice farm visits and sunset dhow trips.
