Lake Manyara National Park

A compact park between the Rift Valley escarpment and a shallow soda lake, with groundwater forest, birdlife and diverse habitats.

Lake Manyara National Park stretches along the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. In a short distance you pass from lush groundwater forest to open floodplain and the shores of the alkaline lake.

The park is known for its birdlife — including flamingos and pelicans when water levels suit them — as well as elephant, giraffe, buffalo, baboons and other primates in the forest. Its size makes it well suited to a half-day or full-day visit en route to Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.

Highlights

  • Rift Valley escarpment scenery
  • Groundwater forest
  • Waterbirds and flamingos (seasonal)
  • Convenient stop on the northern circuit

When to visit

Lake Manyara can be visited all year. The dry season is generally best for larger mammals; the wet season is excellent for birds.

Practical information

The park entrance is near the town of Mto wa Mbu, which also offers walking and cultural activities.
